Brian
Wilson begins his first season as team engineer for the
No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge driven by Brad Keselowski in
the 2010 NASCAR Nationwide Series. In 2009, Wilson worked
as team engineer for the No. 12 Penske Dodge in the Cup
Series. He previously served as the team engineer for the
No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Cup Series team in both 2007 and
2008.
A Detroit native, Wilson grew up around racing. His father, Steve,
was a racer and young Brian began competing in go-karts at age
eight. Wilson raced karts in the Lansing, Mich., area for about
four years and he learned some valuable lessons.
"I learned quickly that I'm no race car driver," Wilson said. "I
was decent, but I never excelled at it."
Wilson began working part-time for Frank Kimmel's championship
ARCA Series team while attending North Carolina State University.
After receiving his degree in mechanical engineering, Wilson
joined Kimmel's operation full-time as the team's shock specialist.
After about 18 months with Kimmel's team, Wilson decided he wanted
to move to NASCAR's Cup Series and his father, who is now in
engine research and development for Richard Childress Racing,
put him in contact with then-Penske Racing South General Manager
John Erickson. At that time, the No. 77 Penske Kodak team needed
a shock specialist and Wilson earned an opportunity with the
squad.
He moved to the No. 2 Miller Lite team as its shock specialist
at the beginning of the 2006 season and was named team engineer
prior to the start of the 2007 campaign. In his three years with
the No. 2 team, Wilson was part of four wins, 18 top-five and
36 top-10 finishes.
In 2009, the NC State graduate worked under the tutelage of veteran
crew chief Roy McCauley with the Penske Dodge team.
Wilson helped
the No. 12 car produce 12 top-20 finishes along with eight top-15
starting spots. He also got the opportunity to work with Keselowski
when he joined the team for the final three races of the season.
"I am really looking forward to the 2010 season," said Wilson. "We
have a great team assembled here. I have been extremely impressed
with what Brad (Keselowski) has done in his career and I am excited
to be a part of his tenure at Penske Racing."
Wilson resides in Mooresville, N.C., with his wife, Alison, who
is pursuing a master's degree at Winthrop University.
